If We Were

Will it not be a better world,
If our vision were still pure.
Without indoctrination, without adulteration;
Without the burden of years,
And the veil of knowledge.
If our eyes saw beauty,
And joy and sorrow.
If we were often blinded by love;
And chafed raw by agony.
If we could still exist in the moment;
Without the promise of future,
Without the threat of failure.
If we, as children, could still roam
The wild plains;
Armed with the wisdom of lives past,
And passion for the now.
