Kashmir #2

usual day

We were moving through the old market of Srinagar (that is entirely on houseboats, and accessible only through the waterways) on Shikara (Kashmiri boats with canopies). The old market has varying shops, a post office, and a doctor’s clinic- all on houseboats; and crops are grown on floating patches of soil. The traffic is much similar to that on our roads. I noticed these two gentlemen chatting-the older man stopped his boat in front of the shop, said hello, and the conversation began. After a while he bid farewell and casually rowed away. It was usual for them and everyone there, but interesting for me, who cannot imagine of not living on land.
